Five years ago Jo Myers-Walker, an established artist took a leap of faith and purchased the vacant bank building on Main street in Gilbert turning it into the Left Bank Studio, gallery and café. Jo has slowly carved a creative oasis unlike any other, luring parched souls thirsting for a creative dousing. She possesses an infectious enthusiasm, making her encouragements irresistible to an every growing band of supporters.
The Left Bank Studio is Myers-Walker’s personal world of creative wonderment. It is her gallery, classroom, kitchen and studio for commissioned works. After serving as Gilbert’s local bank until 1998 the building sat empty on and off until 2003, when Myers-Walker purchased it and began the transformation. The two vaults became a kitchen and office. The teller’s window remains, paying tribute to a bank whose history includes a well-publicized robbery in 1915. Now, the bank’s colorful interior is filled with her watercolors, painted furniture (including 3 baby grand pianos), acrylic and metal sculpture and ceramic busts.
Now, its essence lies in its guiding creator. Her approach is simple: Left Bank Studio is “for artists….and for those who dream of being one.” She delights in recycling related objects thus bringing new life to her work. She holds on going, eight-week class sessions, in watercolor.
The Left Bank Studio draws children and adults yearning for creative outlets, in slumping plastic and clay sculpture. She confidently guides them through projects and activities that awaken dormant talents. “My reward comes when these students achieve that ‘aha’ moment, “Myers-Walker delightedly tells. “Our sessions have the same innocent and wonder-filled experiences of kindergarten classes. Students develop personal journals, wakening their self-discovery
